Yesterday was our last day at our current dance studio. The number of students have dropped a bit since the first class, and I now understand why. Last week, my wife commented that the song I most enjoyed watching the class "perform" was a regular activity at her work. Yesterday, the instructor and hat looked like a couple ninth graders played a counting song that matched the five different ballet positions. I wish I could remember the song. It's very common. It was something Americana like Yankee Doodle, but a counting down from five to one. The toddlers had no idea what was going on as they ran through first, second, third, fourth, and fifth positions. However, when the pulled out the tambourines and drums to walk in a circle to the music, I grabbed my car keys and headed out the door.
We can, and do, do that stuff at home. I'm not interested in paying tuition for activities we do in the apartment.
So, I headed up the street and grabbed a flyer from another studio. When we got home, I made the phone call, and she'll start next week. Unfortunately, our current studio won't miss her because they already have our money, and couldn't call her by name when she got out of the circle towards the end of yesterday's class.
After I hung up the phone, I sent a handful of messages to my wife. She was attending a conference for work in St. Paul, and found my attitude quite humorous.
The new studio is more expensive, but after talking the the owner over the phone, should provide a significantly different learning opportunity for my daughter. The class happened to be starting at the time I picked up the flyer, and I noticed a smaller class size, among other things. This is probably due to cost (and maybe popularity?). It's going to be more expensive, but she'll actually learn (a) routine(s), have a costume, perform in a recital (May 20) and need ballet and tap shoes (which we already have). So, I'm looking forward to the new class. I'm going to miss looking at the sweet purchasable studio gear. I really was looking forward to buying some of it as Linnea grew; however, neat colored sweatshirts and jackets isn't a good enough reason to stick around. Perhaps the new place has gear for sale? If not, we can always make some.
